Lean Into The Problem. See What Comes

Have you ever asked “How am I going to get this done? I don’t know what else to do!

This is an excerpt from a much larger story from the former Director of a community center in a very impoverished neighborhood. One of the largest initiatives there was the food pantry, serving hundreds of people in the neighborhood. She was explaining how the Lord showed up – again – when she was in dire straits.

Jan was sharing that she operates on a shoestring budget and quite often has no money to do what needs to be done. She and her partner, Durham, put almost every penny they have into the Center. On the first morning I interviewed her she told me that they couldn’t go to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to pick up their supplies to take to the neighborhood Center because Durham’s truck was wrecked in an accident the previous week. They were strategizing as to how they would manage the supplies pick-up and settled on renting a U-Haul truck to get their food until his truck was available again. However they didn’t have the full deposit for the rental. Jan was counting on one of her retirement checks being deposited in the bank the following day. She would use that to cover the U-Haul expenses. This was the offer she made to the customer service representative at the rental office.

“He let us pay half and we told him we’ll give the other half in the next couple of days. He didn’t have to do that. That’s not what U-Haul is supposed to do. But when he found out what we were doing he was willing to work with us. It comes. It comes. I’m not saying it comes easy all the time. But it comes. What I’ve had to do is learn patience and tolerance and that it’s in God’s time and not my time. Everything we go into we don’t have any money. I have never seen it as a barrier or a crisis. If we’re going to do it, we just do it. It comes. It just comes.”

She said, “It comes.” God’s provision comes. The Holy Spirit comes. Your guide comes. A door opens and the way comes. When she is trying to accomplish something on behalf of the community, unexpected favor showers down on her. The tasks that seemed insurmountable fade.
