Be At Peace With Yourself

Haiku For Healing At Work

Take 3 long, deep breaths.

Centering brings clarity.

Clarity brings peace.


How often do you find yourself in a situation dealing with people who are draining you? Draining your time, your energy, your peace, etc.?


I once worked as a leadership and organizational effectiveness advisor with a team that was trying to continue their regular operations following a disaster. Chris (not their name) was handling all the technology, everything from putting the entire system in place to troubleshooting all the frequently asked questions. To help everyone manage their needs, Chris created a self-help manual so staff could troubleshoot their own glitches. The guide would also make room for the Chris to give more time and attention to the much larger, critical system being put into place.


Unfortunately people still phoned with questions, constantly interrupting the higher level work that needed to be done. Chris, the sole source for tech help was stressed, being pulled into several directions and not able to focus on what mattered most.


After hearing the story, I had Chris do a few things to gain more awareness of the mind, body, spirit connection. First, to understand physical reactions I told Chris to notice the stress in their body – how and where it was showing up. Once able to identify all of it, I had Chris take 3 long, slow, deep breaths. (Take 4 if you are really going through it.) This simple action clears out the tense feelings.


With a clearer head, I then asked Chris what they wanted and needed.


Answer: to be left alone to complete the tasks assigned, which served a greater, long term purpose.


Keep breathing. Feel the stress dissipate.


I walked Chris through two more steps.

Q: What have you done to help that happen?


A: I created the FAQ guide.


Keep breathing.


Q: How will you now live out what you want?


The body posture changed.


A: I will stop answering their calls and let them use the guide.


The body is more erect. Chris is grounded and centered.


When there is something that we need to let go of, our bodies will broadcast it if we are not paying close enough attention. We are intricately designed beings. Do not dismiss the signals announcing the need for a shift to protect your spirit. Your peace is of utmost importance for you to manage your greater, long term purpose.
